Disney Plus has finally created a competitive library of original series that can compete with other services like Netflix and Max. It is also a treasure trove of Disney nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s. In yet another Marvel series spinoff from the already expansive film universe, Loki takes the endless possibilities of time from Endgame and runs with them. When the titular trickster god is sent to what is basically time prison for stealing the Tesseract in Endgame, Loki is forced to work with the timekeepers to ‘fix reality’ as they know it. Filled with clever dialogue, some genuinely smart things to say about who Loki is as a character, and a genuinely thrilling climax, Loki is one of the best Marvel shows Disney has made. The second season is set to premiere on October 6, 2023.

Gargoyles is based in New York City, where a seemingly benevolent billionaire discovers an ancient species that has been locked in stone since the dark ages. Once freed, these Gargoyle-like creatures find they must adapt to NYC nightlife and traverse modern-day struggles and evil plots as they go. One of the most unique things about this cartoon series is how continuous it is. The story develops over time, and you really need to watch it in chronological to appreciate it truly.

This fantastic cartoon series is based in Gravity Falls, Oregon among the rich northwest wilderness. The plot follows twin siblings, Dipper and Mabel Pines, who are spending the summer at their great uncle’s tourist attraction: The Mystery Shack. It’s hard to explain this series fully, but the long and short of it is that Gravity Falls is a seemingly normal place that’s actually filled with magic. It’s also hilariously witty and you’ll enjoy every minute of it.

Telling the story of Cassian Andor in the days before he became a formal part of the Rebellion, Andor is the kind of thrilling, political TV show that we rarely get on television anymore, whether it’s a Star Wars show or not. Featuring genuinely rousing speeches, some truly sharp direction, and some actual heft behind its performances, Andor is the best Star Wars show by a mile, and maybe the best show on Disney+ period.

Perhaps one of the five best children’s television shows ever made, Bluey is an Australian phenomenon about a family of dogs. While the show is ostensibly targeted at people under the age of 10, one of the more remarkable things about Bluey is how much joy adults can get out of watching it. It’s funny, fun, and subtly profound, and every episode is like 10 minutes long. There are plenty of great shows on Disney Plus worth showing your kids, but if you have to pick just one, it should probably be Bluey.

The series takes an in-depth look at the stories behind many of the most popular rides at Disney theme parks around the world and focuses on everything from major rides to the specialty desserts served at the parks. Is it just one extended ad for the global Disney theme park economy? For sure, but it’s also slickly produced and pretty entertaining if you can look past all the promotion.
