What If? season 2 Disney Plus release suggests that Marvel is burning off shows

After a two-year gap between seasons, Marvel has announced that What If? season 2 will premiere on Disney+ on Friday, December 22. Although the first season of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first animated series was serialized weekly in 2021, What If? season 2 will be releasing an episode per day until the ninth episode (which serves as the season finale) arrives on December 30. That would be strange in of itself, but Marvel is also dropping every episode of its next MCU live-action series, Echo, on January 10 on both Disney+ and Hulu. That’s also a first for a Marvel Studios show.

What’s behind this sudden shift in strategy? The writers’ and actors’ strikes kept Hollywood on hold for over six months this year, and that means new shows and movies are facing severe delays in 2024. Surely Disney+ could have used those Marvel TV shows to shore up some of the driest periods ahead. Instead, Marvel and Disney are burning them off as if they have no confidence in them.

It’s also worth mentioning that Marvel’s upcoming TV slate is pretty light on shows. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Ironheart were both filmed prior to the strikes, and they should easily premiere in 2024. However, next year’s big Marvel series, Daredevil: Born Again, was recently pushed back and retooled by Marvel after the studio decided that the show wasn’t working after numerous episodes had already been filmed. Reports have indicated that Marvel is not abandoning television, but the studio is hiring more TV-savvy executives to handle the shows in the future.

There is indeed. And to give you an idea of how long this season has been in the works, the completed What If? season 2 premiere was screened for fans at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. That episode picks up where the first season left off, as Captain Carter discovers the identity of the person inside the Hydra Stomper mech that was piloted by her boyfriend, Steve Rogers, in the alternate reality they call home.

During season 1, an episode featuring Gamora and Iron Man on Sakaar (from Thor: Ragnarok) was held back for season 2 despite the fact that the Gamora from that world had a large supporting role in the season finale. That Gamora-centric episode is glimpsed here, in addition to an odd pairing of proto-Avengers, including the original Ant-Man, Hank Pym, the Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, and Mar-Vell, the character played by Annette Bening in Captain Marvel. Additionally, there’s a Die Hard riff with Happy Hogan as Avengers Tower is seized by terrorists on Christmas Eve.

Will there be a What If? season 3?

The third season of What If? was reportedly in development as of last year. Regardless, Marvel and Disney+ have yet to acknowledge that officially. The show’s fate may be tied to how well fans react to season 2’s staggered release.

Can Sony’s Madame Web avoid the backlash from The Marvels?

Not too long ago, a comic book movie associated with Marvel was about the closest thing to a sure bet in Hollywood. But as The Marvels' lackluster $48.5 million opening weekend proved, not even Marvel Studios is immune from superhero fatigue in a year with comic book movie flops that included The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Suddenly, being the next Marvel-related movie on deck isn't necessarily as enviable as it used to be. Sony's Madame Web movie is a continuation of the non-Spider-Man films using characters from Peter Parker's supporting cast as movie stars. In this case, the leading character, Madame Web, is bringing together a team of three different Spider-Women: Spider-Girl, Araña, and of course, Spider-Woman.

It's hard not to see the parallels between The Marvels and Madame Web, as both films feature nearly all female leads. The key difference between them is that The Marvels had established heroines who have headlined their own comics or even their own movies and Disney+ shows. Madame Web has never starred in a comic, and her Marvel counterpart is an elderly woman who has only ever been a supporting player in Spider-Man's world. The three Spider-Women in the cast have had short-lived comics, but never anything with long-term success. Given that pedigree, it would be very surprising if Madame Web does much better than The Marvels.

Report: Disney Plus is moving away from Marvel limited series TV shows (but that’s a good thing for fans)

After more than a decade of dominating on the big screen, Marvel started to spend a much greater percentage of its time focusing on creating TV series. That change happened with the launch of Disney Plus, and has resulted in a glut of streaming series set in various corners of the MCU. While many of those shows have been solid, and a few have been great, recent news suggests that Marvel may be reevaluating their relationship with Disney Plus shows.

Up until now, almost every single Marvel show was at least initially conceived as a limited series. Marvel shows like Hawkeye and Moon Knight were conceived of as one-and-dones, and only Loki has thus far received a second season. Now following the news that Daredevil: Born Again was getting a hard rework from Marvel, we also learned that Marvel's whole approach to limited series may be changing.

Although it was originally supposed to hit theaters in November of 2023, Dune: Part Two's delay has left many fans rabid with anticipation for the second part of this story. The first Dune movie left fans in the middle of the story, but also had the kind of attention to detail and careful world-building that made it feel like a truly excellent adaptation of its source material. Now, ahead of Dune 2's release, here's everything we know about the next installment.
What is Dune: Part Two about?
Part Two is set to pick up the story right where Part One left off. When we last saw Timothee Chalamet's Paul Atreides, he and his mother had just joined up with the Fremen after a coup by the Harkonens left them banished from their home on Arrakis. In Part Two, we'll see how Paul ingratiates himself with the Fremen and also how he plans to enact his revenge on the Harkonens and ultimately reclaim the seat of power that his father once inhabited. Paul will also get to spend some more time with his love interest, Chani, who barely appeared in the first movie.

Along the way, we'll also follow Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, as she learns more about Fremen culture and ultimately has another child who will be Paul's sister. At the same time, the Harkonens plot to prevent Paul's return and ascension to the throne.
Is there a Dune: Part Two trailer?
The trailer for Part Two was released in anticipation of the movie's initial release date, which means we've had our first look at the movie for months. There will likely be even more clips and trailers released closer to the movie's actual release date, but this first look will have to do for now.
