My friend John, who directed the movie Sugar (which I co-wrote) came in to
Goodhandy's on Saturday to check it out. Saturday being the "mixed" night, he felt very comfortable as a gay man who is not at all into gay bars. To be clear: we do not consider Goodhandy's to be a gay bar anyways, it is just that John's personal perspective is as someone who has experienced primarily gay bars.
Here are his kind words:
Hi Todd and Amanda,
I want to rave about your new place. Its wonderful and witty and wild. I am mad about T-boys.
The crowd you attract is thankfully unique, sophistocated, laissez-faire, and humane.
Finally a bar (a misnomer but...) in which I felt relaxed!!
It is certainly about Gender but it made me turn upsidedown about it--I had to rethink the whole notion of gender and about time too.
I did not feel uncomfortable as I do in gaybars-- I felt equal despite fat, head and age.
You have opened a unique place here which makes, I think a much needed contribution to Toronto's nightlife and hopefully, tourism industry.
I wish you all the best and send my love.
I know its going to work!
Much luv to you both, John Palmer.
